The Starfighter, developed by Lockheed, was distinguished by its extraordinary manoeuvrability and flight performance. Demand from a range of NATO countries gave rise to substantial European production. Due to the high numbers of crashes the F-104 G, also known as the "widow-maker", went out of service in 1991.
